TYPOGRAPHY BOOKLET
Creating multiple page InDesign booklet
The typography book project is a collection of 16 different parts/pages.
This project introduces common type vocabulary and includes a cover design, anatomy of type, variations, alignment, line space, word space, and type on a path.
Content in black and white only.
Note: you have already studied everything required to create the booklet; in addition, all necessary information is on your class website (class work, homework, resources page)
BOOK CONTENT
Although this project is directly related to typography, you will use any subject of your choice: nature, animals, food, art, people (a favorite performer, athlete, band, writer, yourself, etc.) You will write one-two paragraphs of related information (for example, a short biography if it is a person) and work with this text (or its part) throughout the booklet. This subject will become the actual content of the book.
SETTING UP DOCUMENT
Create a New Document:
- Size 66p0 by 51p0 (11” by 8.5”)
- Orientation Horizontal
- Uncheck Facing Pages
- Pages 16
- Columns: 5 and column gutter 1p (.167”)
- Margins (click on the link icon at the right to unlink the settings):
Top 3p (.5”)
Bottom 3p (.5”)
Left 3p (.5”)
Right 3p (.5”)
- Bleed 0p9 (0.125”)
GUIDES ON THE A-MASTER
1. Click on A-Master page on the Pages panel (make sure you are there, it should be highlighted in blue)
2. From your horizontal ruler click and drag down a guide to 4.125”
3. Then drug another guide 0.125” below the first one
PAGES NUMBERING
1. Make sure you are still on A-Master
2. Drug a placeholder for the page numbers with the Type tool (down-right the page under the margin)
3. Go to Type menu>Insert Special Character>Markers>Current Page Number (you will see letter A in the placeholder)
4. Check the pages, each one should have a page number.
COVER PAGE
The first page a cover, no page number there is needed; start numbering with page 2.
Page re-numbering:
1. Right-mouse click on the second page in the pages panel
2. Click on Numbering & Section Options
3. Put 1 in Start Page Numbering at:
4. Disregard the warning dialog box and click OK
5. Drag [None] that is on the top of the A-Master onto the first page – cover page to get rid of the page number there
PAGE NAME
You will work on design for each page from the first to the fourth column.
Each page should have a title and 3-4 word description of its contents. This text should be positioned in the upper right-hand corner of the fifth column and set in a small font (e.g. 14px). The title should be in capital letters and bold, and the description in light weight. Make right text alignment.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Press W key (only when the Selection tool is selected) every now and then to see your design as it would look printed
- Use keyboard arrow keys to tweak the elements until design becomes perfect
- Save your work very often (!)
- Don’t forget to save the document as PDF as well.

Submission for each class:
1. You have to upload your InDesign and PDF files to your dropbox. Every time when the file is changed/updated, you have to reupload them.
Final Deliverables:
1. Submitted into Dropbox folder
Package your InDesign file
Upload folder of packaged file of your InDesign, named ‘Lastname_Firstnname_Typebook’
2. Print (TBD)
